Luis Orozco – Desnudos
Art exhibition
Duration: 6 – 16 August 2009
Opening: Thursday 6 August at 9 p.m.

“… Suddenly a woman disrobes and sits naked in all her
glory…”
I once saw a blue woman. One of those women you never
forget. Reclining leisurely on her sofa. In her movement
as if she didn’t fit in the picture frame. She was a
painted woman, one of Luis’ women. Defeated yet defiant,
asleep yet warm. A woman out of reach, a woman trapped
in her erotic love.
Years later I saw a black woman, her nipples pink as a
May rose in bloom and a faint deep blue brush stroke
above her eyes; Luis’ woman. Full of her earthy love,
feminine, naked and dignified. She was not alone. There
were others with her; attractive, tender, aristocratic,
mature, erotic and transparent as poems of Embirikos,
Kavvadias, Lorca or Neruda.
Luis painted eleven women this year for his exhibition
at Scala Shop Gallery and, in this way, with the flowers
“taking their scent from their sweet body”, he presented
them to me at his studio. He was happy; his brush had
worked the oils with gusto. He “dressed their eyes with
the colour of the moon”, their bodies “had imprisoned
the agility of the wind”, on the walls that filled the
canvas it was as if “the dawn had strewn its rose
petals”.
Genevieve was right: “…He paints as he breathes, he
turns his every experience into painting. He paints like
he plays music, or sings sometimes, out of a deep
necessity, demand, happiness because painting is all
that, even if, on the other hand, it is quite the
opposite of facility, even asceticism […]”. Genevieve
Couteau
What my eyes saw from the beginning of the ‘60s always
surprised me –his multicoloured Mykonian universe.
Fishermen and greengrocers, alleys and churches, dead
nature and musical instruments, lively fish and
vegetables grouped together with objects that travelled
from the other side of the world, from Mexico. Luis, a
friend of Florakis and Pantos, is perhaps the last of
the generation that filled the end of Matoyianni street
with colour. He is in the company of Theodore
Angelopoulos, Manolis Petalas, Margarita Bakopoulou,
Stavros Xarhakos. From the time he arrived on the
island, he installed himself in the hospitable hive of
Viennoula’s and works tirelessly, having created a
significant body of work and a philosophy of life which
is full of beauty and calm.
Soon, Luis Orozco will mark 50 years in Mykonos. He is a
celebrated personality in the art world and it is a big
honour for us to exhibit a part of his work at Scala
Shop Gallery.

Mykonos has a
long history of art, but its modern history dates back
to the early 1930s with its most representative artists
flourishing in the years 1919-1939. During this period
artists began discovering the play of light in Chora
with its distinctive lines and shadows and the austere
beauty of the island’s countryside. In 1943 the annex of
The School of Fine Arts enhanced this relationship and
Mykonos became an important centre of artistic activity
which attracted many well known art lovers and critics
in the Greek and international art world. The galleries
of the 1960s saw many aesthetic movements through their
doors with an ever-changing panoply of images and
colours the island inspired. This attracted a myriad of
visitors from around the world who carried home with
them more than just memories of their travels but also
representative artworks. With today’s technology, images
are more easily accessible in a variety of media but art
has never lost its significant place and role for it
remains an unparalleled vehicle of feeling and
expression. Comparable to the written word, it is a
meeting point of desire and emotion both for the creator
and those who experience these works and wish to acquire
them. Taking home a work of art from the island brings
with it an ocean of memories, tastes, smells, sights
which become a direct connexion to the place without
necessarily depicting it. It is a piece of history
forever intertwined with one’s own.
Scala Shop
Gallery began as a family run grocery store until 1977
when it was frequented by artists of the neighbourhood
such as Theodore Pantos and Mathios Florakis who came to
do their shopping along with many others such as
Mavroidis, Kessanlis, Moralis Tetsis, Mytaras, and
Vasiliades who would stop in to pick up some roasted
pumpkin seeds as they were entering Chora.
Although we
would not claim that we served Art for the last 26 years
we can say that we have had the pleasure to put on
display many works of art, large and small, by a myriad
of artists which has earned us a loyal following.
For the spring
’09 season Scala Shop Gallery is hosting
George Kypris’ new
work entitled Vortex. The gallery has become synonymous
with his work which has been exhibited in the gallery
for over 26 years. As an avid fisherman he was often
diving to go spear fishing but it was not long before he
was diving simply to explore the fascinating depths of
the sea. In speaking about his new work he notes that
“the movement of the schools of fish and their
dance-like grace was a revelation to which I could not
remain indifferent. Turning my gaze away from human
activities I focused on analysing the movement of fish
and created works/studies of schools as they emigrate or
turn around in vortices.” (See exhibition's catalogue
here)
With the
launching of Kypris’ new work Scala Shop Gallery also
has the pleasure to announce the opening of our newly
renovated gallery.
We are very
happy and we want to share it - so please join us in
celebrating the opening of our gallery on Easter Sunday
after 20.00.
It would be a
pleasure to have you with us.

HAMMAM

The exhibition continues until 31st July
The municipal gallery of Mykonos will host
a creative photography exhibition by photographer and
digital artist Thalassini Douma, entitled TIME between
September 21 and 27, 2007, at Matoyianni on the island of
Mykonos. TIME – A
look at masterpieces from Delos.
Douma's lens, for an instant, brings alive
the marble sculptures on the island of Apollo.
The statues, -obviously masterpieces of ancient artists -
have now a human, detrimental, melancholic charm with a
feeling of vanity as well as a suggestion of erotisicm.
The choice of gray and pink colors in her artwork is not
accidental. The first declares the ware and tare of time,
while the pink color shows the youth’s aliveness that her
works emit.
“To experience Delos is a magical journey through time.
Delos' uniqueness stirred my emotions, allowing me to give
something back,” Douma said.
Douma lives and works in Greece and Italy, and has staged
or participated in six successful exhibitions since 2006.
The
exhibition will be
inaugurated of Saturday, September 22, at 9 pm. Admission
is free.

The Alexander S. Onassis
Public Benefit Foundation, as part of its program for the
promotion of Greek culture in Greece and abroad, presents
a major cultural event on the island of Delos, entitled "Delios
Apollon".
The event will take place on Saturday September 1st, 2007,
and features the Filarmonica della Scala and soloists of
the Teatro alla Scala Ballet. The first part of the event

will be directed by Mo Daniele Gatti.
"Delios Apollon" will bring together well-renown
artists from all over the world to Delos, an important
religious sanctuary in ancient times and, according to
Greek mythology, the birthplace of Apollo. The event will
highlight the diachronic nature of Greek culture and its
importance for contemporary creation.
The event on the island of Delos will be broadcast
nationally on television by theHellenic Broadcasting
Corporation (ERT) and internationally-via satellite- to
the Greeks of the Diaspora and to networks outside of
Greece that have expressed interest in broadcasting the
event.

Revenues from ticket sales of the Athens performance will
benefit the Hellenic Society for Disabled Children (ELEPAP).
The cultural event is held in association with Attiki
Cultural Society; its contribution has been invaluable
with regard to the creation of the artistic program and to
ensuring the collaboration of the Filarmonica della Scala
and the Teatro alla Scala Ballet soloists, as well as to
the organization and production of the performances, both
in Delos and at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
